So many of you know that using direct flash can result in unsightly shadows and blown highlights which is why we try to either bounce the flash off a roof or a wall or use some sort of flash diffuser to soften the light. I have come up with a novel, cheap and easy to make solution using a plastic ice cream lid. See the pictures for how to do it and the results using it.... Enjoy and let me know how you get on..... (you can click on the images to enlarge them).
The ice cream lid and the cut out section
Ruler for scale and dimensions
I used a sharp pair of scissors to cut the shape out
Attach the diffuser using a Velcro band or elastic band
Note the harsh shadow and highlights created by direst flash
The ice cream lid diffuser does a much better job with softer highlights and shadow
This is the effect that bouncing the flash off the roof gives but it is not always possible to bounce the flash everywhere.
